A Fellowship of Believers

The Plan You Need to Recover From Life’s Little Failures

As a born and bred Nebraskan, I am a Husker fan at heart. And while Nebraskans sure do love our Husker football, over the past decade or two, volleyball has been the top sport at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The volleyball team is consistently ranked in the Top 10 of all Division 1 women’s volleyball teams, and the 2023 season was no exception. In fact, the team spent most of the season in the No. 1 slot.

But before getting up to the top rank, the Huskers were ranked second for a while, and they were undefeated. At that time, Wisconsin was ranked No. 1, and they were also undefeated. Unfortunately, Wisconsin was and is quite possibly Nebraska’s biggest weakness when it comes to wins and losses. For whatever reason, over the past several years, even if the Huskers are beating everybody else, they often simply can’t beat Wisconsin.

Well, these two undefeated teams’ courses collided one Saturday in late October. There couldn’t have been a more compelling lead-up to the big match. No. 1 vs No. 2, the battle of the unbeatens, the team that Nebraska never seems to get past, sold out arena, game broadcasted in prime time TV. Let’s gooo! And the match more than lived up to its billing. It was back and forth the entire time, and of course it went to a deciding fifth set in the best-of-five matchup. Both teams fought through momentum shifts and dry spells, but they kept fighting and always brought themselves back into contention when it seemed like they might be defeated. In the end, Nebraska squeaked it out by two points. Even from my couch in Kansas City, the scene after the Huskers’ victorious match point was quite a sight to behold. Tears, cheers, smiles and relief! There was a new No. 1 team in college volleyball.

One of the postgame interviews with Nebraska captain Merritt Beason revealed her team’s mindset and preparedness for the guaranteed ups and downs of the match. She referenced the team’s “FRS,” or “failure recovery system.” She said when they prepare for games, they talk about their FRS. They know they will experience little losses, or failures, throughout the game. That’s guaranteed! (Check it, you won’t find many–or any?–shutout volleyball wins. That would mean the winning team didn’t lose a single point throughout the entire match.) So athletes are mentally prepared for failures along the way. But their main focus is on how they will recover from those failures! They have a failure recovery system that prepares and motivates them to get back up, stay positive and mentally move on toward the next success. The team has pre-decided to come together after each failure, encourage one another, and intentionally step past the failure and on to the next play.

We need an FRS for life, am I right? Because we are sinful people (Romans 3:23), we know we will face setbacks and feelings of failure every single day. It may just be small things–like snapping back at a family member, lacking the motivation to get out of bed for church, or telling a little white lie. Or, it may be bigger things. But no matter how we fall short, we need a failure recovery system in place. Where better to turn for this than the Bible?

  1. Ask God to reveal your sin. (Psalm 139:23-24)
  2. Confess it before God and ask for forgiveness. (1 John 1:9)
  3. Repent–turn in a new direction. (Acts 3:19)
  4. Thank God for His love, mercy and grace. (Psalm 106:1-2)
  5. Repeat.

The Nebraska volleyball players never stopped activating their FRS while in pursuit of victory. They were committed and engaged until the final point was scored. What if they’d gotten too discouraged after losing a few points in a row in one set and given up? The players and coaches would have missed out on the joy of TRIUMPH! But that TRIUMPH only came because they continually acknowledged their failures and decidedly stepped forward anyway.

If you’re feeling down and discouraged, like you’ve been failing and falling too short too often, pick your mind up! Struggles are guaranteed. But thanks to Jesus’ death and resurrection, victory is also guaranteed. So activate your FRS as many times as you need to each day, and step forward anyway. Each step forward is one step closer to our final win as believers–entering into eternity with Jesus! Maybe that ultimate winning point will be similar to a packed arena, with the crowd rushing the court and tears of joy and excitement on everyone’s faces. I guess we’ll have to wait and see… In the meantime, let’s FRS our way a little bit closer today.

In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. -John 16:33
