Picture this…
You’re babysitting a toddler. It’s your best friend’s daughter, and you volunteered to watch her for a few hours while your friend attends an evening work dinner. Two hours, no problem. Now imagine, Heaven forbid, that the little one gets herself locked in the bathroom—and the door locks from the inside. She’s in an unfamiliar home with someone who’s not her mom. You can hear her whimpering, and you can sense that she’s scared. But because you cannot see her, it’s hard to fully assess the situation. What is she doing in there? Is she digging through drawers? Pulling apart the entire roll of toilet paper? Tugging on the shower curtain and loosening the curtain rod slowly but surely, increasing the likelihood of it coming down on her head? Did she pick up your brand new razor that has a sharp blade on it? Is she squeezing toothpaste everywhere…. Or dropping things into the toilet that shouldn’t be dropped into a toilet? Is she having a panic attack out of fear?
Because you can only hear her, you don’t have a full picture of her state of being. You can talk to her, yes, but you can’t truly know whether or not she is okay.
Do you ever wonder if God is only listening to you but not really seeing you? Do you ever wonder if He sees you but is not actually listening? Does it ever cross your mind that He might be seeing and hearing you but not truly understanding what you’re feeling and needing?
One thing I love about the very beginning of Moses’ call to lead the Israelite nation out of Egyptian slavery is how personal God showed Himself to be. As you may recall, God caught Moses’ attention through a burning bush (that wasn’t burning). God then called out to Moses from the bush and thus began a conversation about Israel that would continue between the two of them for the rest of Moses’ life. Moses was God’s chosen man to lead the Israelites out of slavery, through their wilderness wandering years, and on toward the promised land. Along the way, Moses passed along to the people God’s commandments and instructions for right living.
But at the very start, God called Moses’ name (Exodus 3:4), identified Himself (Exodus 3:6), and then made it clear that He knew exactly what the Israelites were going through. Here is the verse I love that spares no words in describing each way the Lord was aware of His people:
Then the Lord said, “I have observed the misery of my people in Egypt, and have heard them crying out because of their oppressors. I know about their sufferings.” -Exodus 3:7
Now here’s the verse again, with some of my own emphasis added:
Then the Lord said, “I have observed the misery of my people in Egypt, and have heard them crying out because of their oppressors. I know about their sufferings.” -Exodus 3:7
I love that God didn’t just see them… He didn’t just hear them… And He didn’t just know about what they were going through… He had the complete picture from using multiple senses, which gave Him full understanding. He saw what was happening, He heard their cries, and He knew what they were dealing with. What a God we have!
God sees, hears and knows your life circumstances today, too. Proof of this is all throughout the Bible, but here are just a couple passages picked out for you to see.
GOD SEES YOU.
GOD HEARS YOU.
GOD KNOWS YOU.
God does not just see you. He does not just hear you. He does not just know you. He’s observing you, He hears your cries and your celebrations, and He knows you intimately. He understands! His grasp of your circumstance today is complete and all-encompassing. And guess what? It is literally impossible for you to get yourself into a situation where He can’t see, hear or know what you’re going through. You cannot back yourself into a corner (or a bathroom that locks from the inside) where you are out of His reach. Take comfort in that today. Thank you, God!
