A Fellowship of Believers

A Verse for When… You Want to Know God Better

Different Bible translations are so helpful and insightful sometimes. I usually read the New International Version, but I love looking up passages in other translations like The Message and the Amplified Bible. They can provide deeper understanding and new insights. The King James Version is one I don’t frequently read, but its formal language is appealing to many folks. A friend of mine recently purchased a King James Version Bible because he said he loves the sound of reading Scripture in that classic old-time language.

I totally understand this! Sometimes a specific wording or phrase just hits differently, right? That happened with Job 22:21 for me. Actually, the different translations differ quite a bit with the first part of this verse! But the specific words that really resonated with me came from the King James Version. It says:

Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee. -Job 22:21

What a thought. Get to know God, and you will find peace. When we spend time learning more about God’s attributes and history of faithfulness throughout history, we understand more about His character and what He’s like. The better you know Him, the more peace you will find deep in your heart and soul.

Perhaps this motivates you to spend more time getting to know your Savior. So how do you do that?

Well, how do you get to know another person? Imagine you have a new coworker who you really clicked with from day one. You can just tell that she aligns with you in many ways, and it seems like the two of you could be great friends. What’s your move? What would you do in order to pursue a deeper friendship with that person? You might start by watching the way she operates at work and interacts with other people. It’s easy to learn about a person by simply observing! As time passes, you’d talk to her to get to know her more, and you’d make plans to spend time together. You would ask her about her life story, and you would share yours with her. The two of you wouldn’t go from strangers to best friends forever in just a day… It would take some time. But the time would surely be enjoyable!

And the better you two get to know each other, the more comfortable you’d feel around her. Eventually, you would be able to lay down any pretenses and just be yourself. Ahhh what a great feeling that is, wouldn’t you agree? When you find those people in life with whom you can let down your guard and just be you, they are people to treasure and enjoy to the max.

Getting to know God and acquainting thyself with Him is much the same. You can get to know God more by talking to Him, spending time with Him, and observing Him at work.

Here are few quick ideas for how to do this:

  • Converse with Him! Talk to Him while you drive, while you do dishes and while you’re exercising. As you go throughout your day, keep Him involved. Check with Him before you have that difficult work meeting or when your family member is in the midst of testing your patience. And then, don’t forget to listen, too. A good conversation isn’t one-sided.
  • Spend time with Him by reading your Bible daily. Even if it’s just one short story, something is better than nothing! When you read the Bible, you’re also reading God’s actual WORDS. Scripture is inspired by God. 2 Timothy 3:16 says it is God-breathed. So when you read His Word, you’re getting to know Him at a deeper level.
  • Study His attributes one by one using the concordance in the back of your Bible (or a Google search) to find examples of His perfect character in the Word.
  • Journal about God’s record of faithfulness in your life. Keep track of answered prayers, unexpected blessings, and all of the ways you see Him be active in your life. When you observe what God does, you learn so much about who He really is.
  • In addition to watching Him work in your life, study what He did in the lives of people recorded throughout Scripture. Notice how He spoke to them, how He answered their prayers, how He encouraged them, how He challenged them, how He pushed them to take faith risks, how He came through for them, how He protected them, how He disciplined them, how He instructed them and how He provided for them. Watching His words and actions with other people acquaints you with Him more deeply and intimately.
  • Sing about Him—to Him. There are new worship songs being released constantly. There are also centuries-old hymns with lyrics that are timeless. Singing songs to God in worship draws your attention to Him! It can also teach you new things about who He is, while imprinting godly phrases on your heart.

Of course, there are many more ways to get to know God better. The more you get to know Him, the greater the extent to which you have acquainted thyself with Him, the more you can lay down any pretenses and be yourself. …the more you can let down your guard and just be you. …the more you can enjoy freedom and peace.

What will you do today to acquaint yourself with the God of the universe? Remember, He’s not only the Almighty King, He also knows how many hairs are on your head. Before He even formed you in your mother’s womb, He knew you. He is well acquainted with you. So how well are you acquainted with Him? Just imagine what might change in your life if you got to know Him better.

Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee. -Job 22:21
