A Fellowship of Believers

A Song for When… You Know You’re Made for More

Here with a song recommendation for you today! Do you know the song “Made for More,” by Bethel Music? We were singing this song in church a couple weeks ago, and I loved the way it reminded me that Jesus is the starting place. Everything starts with Him—even my own relationship with Him. It starts with Him, and my job is to respond.

The first verse says:

I know who I am ‘cause I know who You are … The cross of salvation was only the start … Now I am chosen, free and forgiven … I have a future and it’s worth the living

Such a great reminder, don’t you think? I know who I am because I know who Jesus is. You know who you are because you know who Jesus is. Everything starts with Him! He is the beginning, the foundation and the focal point. Because He is who He is, believers can find their identity. These lyrics remind us of that identity—chosen, free and forgiven. We are people who have something to live for.

The chorus of the song creates three vivid and powerful word pictures. Here are the lyrics:

‘Cause I wasn’t made to be tending a grave … I was called by name … Born and raised back to life again … I was made for more … So why would I make a bed in my shame … When a fountain of grace is running my way … I know I am Yours … And I was made for more

Word Picture #1: Tending a grave. Are you living like you’re tending a grave? What does that even mean? As I consider that phrase, I imagine that if I’m busy tending a grave (while I’m supposed to be living), I’m way too wrapped up in worldly temptations, sins, habits, routines, mindsets and relations. Worldly focuses lead only to death, while a heavenly perspective is life-giving.

  • Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. -Romans 8:5-6

Word Picture #2: Making a bed in my shame. Even though, as believers, we know it’s best to keep our eyes and minds fixed on Jesus, it’s all too easy to get pulled down by both sin and the allure and deception of Satan. We are sinful people, so we make mistakes—lots of them, and that will not change until we are in eternity with Jesus. So how do you move forward when you realize that you’ve been pulled into sin? Some people struggle to move forward at all. Instead, they make a bed in their shame. It’s likely that we’ve all done this at some point or another, whether for a short or extended period of time. One of the messages of this chorus is that we’re better than that! As followers of Jesus, we were made for more than sitting in shame and guilt about past mistakes. In Christ, we find forgiveness, which brings with it freedom from guilt and shame.

  • Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. -Romans 8:1-2
  • “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” -Hebrews 8:12

Word Picture #3: A fountain of grace. What a fun thing to think about! Grace involves getting what we don’t deserve. It is God’s unmerited goodness, favor, love and kindness. The world operates in such a transactional way that grace can feel awkward and even foreign. But not only does God offer us more than we deserve through His grace, but He offers it in abundance! A fountain of grace! This helps remind us that we are His. It reinforces our identity in Him and helps us believe that we are made for more. His grace offers us salvation! So why would we settle for a mediocre life that is tied to a grave or a bed of shame?

  • For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God. -Ephesians 2:8

“Made for More” has quite a bit of repetition, so the only other different set of words goes like this:

Oh hallelujah … You called out my name … So I’ll sing out Your praise … Hallelujah … You buried my past … And I’m not going back

Yet another reminder that Jesus is the starting place. Did you catch that in the second phrase of this stanza? You called out my name. God did that! He calls your name so that you can sing His praise. And then at the very end, we sing, You buried my past. God did that! He buried your past so that you don’t have to go back to it. Instead, you can walk toward life, freedom, grace and goodness. You can walk toward MORE! You can live for MORE! Because you were made for more.
