There’s a new Christian boy band on the scene! Ha! But seriously… When I heard that some of my favorite songwriters and musicians were putting out an album together, I got nerd-ily excited. While the full album hasn’t dropped yet, a few songs have been released into the world, and I love them. One is called “Runnin With Angels,” by the Sons of Sunday. I promise it’s impossible to listen to this song without at least bobbing your head along to the groove of the music. Listen to the first 30 seconds, and you’ll see exactly what I mean! (Or the last 30 seconds. Equally groovy.)
One thing I love about this song is the repetition it features. The repetition is on juuust the right lines for me and what I’ve needed to hear recently. I have found myself singing a couple lines of this song over and over when my mind is drifting into the territory of insecurity and unbelief.
Yeah nothing’s gonna stop what God begun … What He begun … What He begun … Let it be done … Let it be done
Whether it’s humming or actual singing, I have repeated these lines over and over—reminding myself that what God sets into motion, no one and nothing can stop. Music is so helpful in that way. Have you heard the term earworm before? According to an article I read on The Kennedy Center’s website, an earworm is a fragment of music, usually just a few measures, that repeats over and over again in our minds—sometimes uncontrollably. The auditory cortex is the part of the brain where musical memories are stored. Brain scientists have found that people’s memory for music is incredibly powerful. Putting information to music can even help you remember facts and details more easily! For me, when it comes to the “Runnin With Angels,” the Sons of Sunday have helped me remember this fact more readily: Nothing can stop what God has begun.
The entire song fleshes out this very idea. God is sovereign over all! Anything He sets into motion will be carried through to completion. The examples the Sons of Sunday sing about remind us of God’s character and capabilities.
God is more powerful than Satan…
Got the devil below me … ‘Cause I’m runnin’ with angels
God can make a way in miraculous fashion…
The ocean’s a highway … When you know who splits the seas
God breaks chains and offers freedom…
The prison’s a hotel … When you know who’s got the keys
God is perfectly sovereign over all…
Let the chariots chase me … ‘Cause I’m movin’ at God’s speed
And with each of these lyric couplets in mind, the resounding message of the song rings clear! Nothing can stop what God has begun. So the next time you need to be reminded that your God is all-powerful and unstoppable, dial up “Runnin With Angels” by the Sons of Sunday. Not only has God been an unstoppable force throughout human history, but He is an unstoppable force in YOUR LIFE, too! Nothing can stop Him. No one can stop Him. What He begun? Let it be done!
