The Christian life is not one free from trouble, pain, struggle, heartbreak and emptiness. Once a person has chosen to put his/her trust in Jesus, that doesn’t mean life is only butterflies and rainbows from that point forward. The world is full of sin and brokenness that impacts people daily, and everybody deals with more significant pain and struggle at some time or another. I’ve heard pastors say that if you’re not currently in a valley of life, facing a difficult situation, you’re probably on your way to one. The hills and valleys of our journeys are a sure bet. There will be ups, and there will be downs. Count on it.
My family was blindsided with an unexpected “down” this past summer, and I know it was no coincidence that God had brought the song, “AMEN!” by Rita Springer across my path just a few weeks prior. My sister-in-law went to be with Jesus in sudden fashion, which, of course, left her loved ones feeling heartbroken and empty. Although we were (and are) thrilled for her, death is still devastating for those of us left here on earth. But even in the inevitable sad times, God is sovereign. He can be trusted completely.
You’ve probably learned that the word amen means so be it. Have you? When you say amen at the end of a prayer, you’re giving one final affirmation to the words you’ve spoken. Amen! So be it. While we most often say amen at the end of prayers, we could also say amen at the end of each day. It would essentially be like saying, So be it! Whatever happened today, so be it. God is in control, and I submit to His perfect plan for my life—ups and downs, easy and hard, happy and sad. Amen. So be it! I acknowledge God’s sovereignty and ultimate authority.
Rita Springer’s song reflects this very idea. Here’s the first verse:
So be it, no more questions … Answers come when You give them … I cry out, God I believe it … This will be my last word … So be it, perfect timing … The promise You’re providing … You’re the manna I am finding … This will be my last word … This will be my last word
As she sings these words, she’s saying, so be it. I won’t question you, God. I will cry out to you, but I’ll trust in your perfect provision and timing. The final words of this verse say, “This will be my last word.” What will be? What will be her last word? The answer comes in the chorus immediately following:
Amen (Amen) when the brook dries up … Amen from an empty cup … Amen when there’s not enough … God, hear me say it again … Amen (Amen) from the wilderness … Amen from the lions’ den … Amen when there’s nothing left … God, hear me say it again … Amen (Amen Amen) … God hear me say it again … Amen (Amen Amen)
What a good and beautiful—but HARD—thing to say. No matter what happens in life, to just say, amen, so be it, surely isn’t easy. It’s easy to agree with God when everything is going smoothly, right? But that’s not what this song is about. The lyrics of this song focus solely on the seasons of life when your proverbial brook is dried up and your cup is empty. This is for those times when you’re crying out to God from the wilderness or the lions’ den. And the song boldly proclaims that even from those places and situations, the response will be the same—amen, so be it.
So be it, You have seen me … Your word won’t come back empty … I trust You so completely … This will be my last word … This will be my last word
And there appears the key word. TRUST. It’s easy to trust God in the good times, but we are called to trust Him at all times. Furthermore, we are called to trust Him completely. That’s actually a critical part of making it through the tough times that will inevitably come! Why? When you choose to trust God, He fills you with His peace.
You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you. -Isaiah 26:3
Peace. What could you want more than that in a difficult season? And you know it’s not just any peace, it’s literally the perfect peace of God. He is worthy of our complete trust and surrender, and we are challenged and called to give Him just that. When we do, He will not disappoint! His faithfulness will flow, and His peace, provision, blessing and anointing will not run out. As the song states:
Your oil never runs … Never runs never runs out … You provide every time … Every time every time … So why would I doubt it
There’s no need to doubt! God will come through. Can you look back at a low point in your life when God came through for you? When He provided just what you needed? Looking back on His past faithfulness can help dispel any doubts that arise today or in the future. His perfect record of loyalty and devotion to you can also help you say amen, so be it the next time it feels like life is falling apart. As difficult as it may be, surrender to His plan. Trust in Him in unwavering fashion. And if all else fails, just keep saying Amen, Jesus. So be it. Amen, Jesus. So be it. He will meet you there and carry you through.
