What are some of your favorite names for God? Do you have a few names for Him that you tend to use over and over when you’re talking to Him? The new-ish song, “Call God,” by Elevation Worship, brings up several different names of God that are lovely to reflect on. Here are the names the song lists at one point or another:
The song also names a few of God’s attributes:
Scripture backs up each of these names and attributes! Use your Bible’s concordance or an internet search bar, and you can easily find verses to match each one. Spending time speaking and reading the names and character traits of God is always time well spent. In addition, calling God a variety of names can deepen your relationship with Him and expand your understanding of Him. So challenge yourself to do just that!
While I love this entire song, my absolute favorite part is the chorus. Check out these lyrics:
I call God on the mountain … I call God in the valley … I call God on the good days … I call God when the enemy surrounds me … I call God just to thank Him … Just to tell Him that I love Him … I call God ‘cause He saved me … I’m so glad He didn’t leave me like He found me
I LOVE the reminder here that we can call on God in any situation! For me, it can be easy to slip into a habit of just calling on God when I need Him. …you know those kinds of times, when you’re in trouble or find yourself in an unexpectedly sticky situation. At those times, turning to God might feel more natural than ever.
But what about when everything is going well? Do you call on Him then, too? As the song states, we can call on God on the good AND bad days. We can turn to Him in the mountains AND the valleys. We don’t need to wait until we need His help. In fact, we shouldn’t wait until we need His help! Turning to God with words of gratitude, joy and love is a beautiful thing.
You don’t only talk to your best friend about the hard things you’re facing in life, do you? Don’t you also tell her when something awesome happens? Don’t you sometimes just thank her for being such a faithful companion? Don’t you also text/call her on just a regular ol’ good day when you want to tell her about the yummy meal you just ate or the funny Netflix episode you watched? Of course! You call her on the good days AND bad days. You turn to her in the mountains AND the valleys. That’s what friendship is all about.
Don’t forget to call on God all the time. No need to wait until things get hard and you need Him. Include Him in everything! He created you, and He delights in you. Don’t you think He loves it when you call on Him all throughout your days, weeks, months, years and life?
Invite God in today. Your Savior, Rock of Salvation, King, Healer, Provider and Defender. The name above every other name—Jesus. He is waiting to hear your call…
