Do you think very often about the day Jesus comes back? He IS returning! God has the day marked on His calendar when Jesus will come in the clouds. His return will be sudden, physical, visible and unexpected. Every eye will see Him! And on that day, the choice each person has made about whether or not they believe in Him will be made permanent. God will honor the desires of His people. For those who had no interest in Him, He will give them what they wished for—separation from Him. Eternally. On the other hand, believers in Christ will be raised up with Him in glorified bodies to enjoy eternal joy and fellowship with the Almighty God of the universe.
The song, “He Who Is To Come,” talks about this day that’s coming with words straight from the Bible. Written by Cody Carnes, Kristian Stanfill and Passion, the song will get your senses heightened as you fill with anticipation for the moment when Jesus returns to make all things new. The song opens with these lyrics:
There is a day coming … When the old will pass away … very wrong will be made right … No darkness, no night … The Son will light the way … There is a King coming … The one who conquer death and grave … No more pain and no more sorrow … This hope for tomorrow … Is our hope for the day
Perhaps you’ve heard words like these often enough that they’ve lost some of their weight. The old will pass away as everything is made right. There will be no need for the sun because Jesus will be the light. The world will have no more darkness, night, pain and sorrow. Jesus, our victorious King, has conquered death and the grave! None of these words should be read or taken lightly. The world as we know it will actually PASS AWAY. There will literally be NO DARKNESS OR NIGHT. Not a SINGLE person will cry a SINGLE tear or feel a SINGLE bit of pain. Because we live in a world tainted by sin, all of this is pretty hard for our finite minds to imagine. But there is a day coming…
The chorus of this song focuses on Jesus—He who is to come. It says:
He who was, He who is … He who was, He who is … He who is to come … Christ the Son of man … Riding on the cloud with a crown upon His head … Every eye will see Him … With the nail scars in His hands … Hallelujah, Hallelujah
This is the One we live for. He exists outside of time. He was, is and is to come. There has not been a single day in the span of human history when Jesus was not the sovereign, reigning King. And while many people recognize Him as such, many don’t. But on the day when He returns, every single person will not only see Him but also acknowledge Him as Lord. Can you even imagine what that will be like? There is a day coming…
I love the next little stanza because it covers complete praise. Read these words:
There’s only One worthy … Of all glory and all praise … All wealth and honor … Strength, wisdom and power … To the Lamb that was slain, oh, oh
This is almost straight out of Revelation 7:11-12, which says, “All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying: “Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!”
The note in my NIV Bible says, “The sevenfold list of attributes expresses complete or perfect praise.” If you listen to “He Who Is To Come,” lift your eyes up to Heaven when you get to this part of the song. Worship!
The later lyrics in this song give me goosebumps. A final verse says:
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah … He’s surely coming … Oh, can you feel it too? … All this tension growing stronger … It’s just a sign He’s getting close … He’s already on the move
I love these words because they remind us to maintain a sense of urgency. It’s easy to get complacent and just assume that Jesus’ second coming is far off on the horizon… But that is not the mindset and attitude He calls us to have. In the final 14 verses of Revelation, three times Jesus says, “I am coming soon.” That’s the sentiment shared in this stanza! The tension is growing stronger. Can you feel it? JESUS IS ON THE MOVE!
If you don’t feel the tension growing stronger… If you don’t have any urgency about living for Him and making sure your loved ones are prepared to meet Him face to face… This song might help get you set in a more Jesus-centric state of heart and mind. I’ll let the song wrap up this post. Read these lyrics aloud. Savor them, and take them to heart.
Hallelujah … Yeah, the story has been written … We all know how it ends … (Hallelujah, Hallelujah) … My future has an anchor … My eyes are on the Savior … Oh, He’s coming back again
