A Fellowship of Believers

A Forecast That Will Never Let You Down

As a teacher, I also end up doubling as a professional weather watcher for a couple months each year. Why? Because of the joy of snow days, of course! No matter what career field you work in, there’s nothing like an unexpected gift of free time. Right? In the education world these days, snow days don’t always look like they used to. Since we realized we could “hold school” remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic, we now have a couple actual snow days each winter when the weather acts up, but we mostly have virtual school days, where teachers and students are engaging in teaching/learning from the comfort of their homes.

After 17 years of teaching, I feel pretty qualified to talk about the best kind of snow day. First, let’s just establish the fact that a real snow day (no work required) is obviously better than an “AMI Day,” where we are using alternate methods of instruction, otherwise known as remote teaching and learning.

Second, let’s talk about the timeline of when a snow day gets called. Sometimes the decision is made in the early morning hours. For example, one time this past winter, there was a somewhat unexpected overnight layering of ice that quickly made roads extremely dangerous. A day off wasn’t really on my radar, but I got the call around 5 a.m. and promptly climbed back into the cozy warmth of my bed.

We also had several days this past winter where the weather situation allowed for the decision to be made the night before. I love it when this happens because I can stay up later, maybe make hot cocoa and watch a movie, and just relax at a different level, knowing I don’t have to go to work the next day. A couple times when that highly anticipated call came in the evening hours, it was because so much snow had fallen that roads were unsafe for multiple days at a time.

But once, schools in the Kansas City area made the decision—the evening before—to cancel in-person learning based purely off forecasted weather reports that were predicting a significant amount of snow to come overnight. I remember that evening because I stayed up later and fell asleep on the couch watching a movie. When I woke up in the middle of the night to move to my bed, I peeked out the window to see how much snow had fallen so far, and absolutely nothing had happened. I smiled and thought to myself, Wouldn’t it be funny if the meteorologists were completely wrong, and no snow ended up falling? The snow did eventually come, and the previous evening’s school cancellations were validated. But still, how hilarious would it have been if school had been cancelled for nothing. I’m sure it has happened before…

Perhaps because the promises of God were on my mind at the time, thanks to She Reads Truth’s “Promises of God” three-week reading plan back in February, another thought popped into my mind. I’m so glad I never have to wonder if a promise God has made will be kept. Reports and predictions from weather folks are constantly adjusted, and sometimes the predicted weather events end up not coming to fruition at all. But God never has to adjust His words, and every promise He makes comes to fruition—perfectly.

How can we know for sure? The Bible tells us so.

For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God. -2 Corinthians 1:20

God keeps every single promise He makes. If you’re ready for a little refresher on what God has promised you, here’s a starting place. His promises are scattered throughout the Bible. Some were made to specific people at a specific time, but most are for all of us—His followers. Some are for today, while others are more future focused (although even those can often be experienced at some level in the present). Some may be easy to identify in our lives, with others being more abstract and tricky to put a finger on. Some are answered exactly like we want them to be, but in other situations, God’s sovereign ways stray from our human expectations.

No matter the circumstance, though, God has a perfect record of faithfulness, and if you need a reminder of this, just look to the pages of Scripture. Sometimes you’ll see Him keeping promises in what we might call conventional and expected ways. For example, after God flooded the earth in Genesis 12, He promised Noah to never flood the earth like that again. We can confirm that God has kept that promise! Never again has history seen a flood that literally wiped out the entire earth and all of mankind (except for anyone floating in a huge ark, that is).

On the other hand, sometimes His promises kept seem to be a far cry from conventional and expected. In Exodus, God promised that He would deliver the Israelites from their Egyptian slavery and take them to the land He promised their forefathers. This could have looked like one simple journey from Egypt to the promised land, but instead, it stretched out over decades and involved plagues descending, sea waters splitting, food raining down from Heaven, walls crumbling at the trigger of shouts and music, and so much more. Surely there were plenty of occasions within the Israelites’ long journey when they wondered about God’s methods and timing. But ultimately, a promise made was a promise kept.

Bottom line? Trust God! He keeps His promises in ways that are easy to see, and He also keeps His promises in ways that you might never expect—or even understand right away. You never need to question Him like you might question a meteorologist. Although you might need to walk to the window in the middle of the night and look out to see if that forecasted snow is actually falling, you don’t need to check up on the promises of God! He has kept them all, He is keeping them all, and He will keep them all forevermore. What a God. ♥️
