AAA and I are very close friends. Flat tires, dead batteries, a stolen catalytic converter, a dead starter… You name it, and I’ve most likely called AAA for help with it. Most recently, I called for assistance putting on my spare tire after driving over something that put such an effective hole in my tire, I literally watched the tire deflate in a manner of minutes after getting safely parked. This ended up leading to an entire new set of tires on my vehicle because I was close to needing some new wheels anyway.
But just two weeks into driving on my brand new tires, of course, my “low tire pressure” light came on on my way to work early one morning. And, of course, I drove right back to the place that had just put on my new tires so they could take a look. Because I have such splendid luck when it comes to cars, it was only fitting that they found a screw in one of my two-week-old tires. And, of course, even though the tire was definitely still under warranty, I still owed them $50 for the work of changing the tire and for the new warranty on my new new tire.
When the worker gave me the news about what I owed, I was less than thrilled, and he could definitely sense my frustration. I knew it wasn’t his fault, but still, I could not successfully hide my exasperation at the latest car bill on a list of many over the past couple years. I apologized, and I commented that he’s probably often the unfortunate recipient of people’s frustration and disgust, usually through no fault of his own. He said, yes, I have to be the bearer of bad news, which isn’t always fun!
That got me thinking about a variety of jobs where people have to be the ones to deliver bad news. What a tough position to be in! For example, that poor customer service call center worker who picks up the phone when someone calls in to complain about their cable bill being too high? The worker has absolutely NO control of cable prices, and she certainly has no power to change them. But still, she’s stuck delivering the bad news that your bill isn’t going down, and no, you can’t get the lower price that brand new customers get for their first month. (And yes, I have been on one end of a call just like that one! Ha!)
As believers in Jesus, we can deliver all kinds of GOOD news to people. Isn’t that incredible? Aside from hard truths about sin, which may feel like bad news to some people in some situations, the Bible is absolutely full of good news. If you or somebody in your life needs to hear some good news today, here are 10 pieces.
Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” -Exodus 14:13-14
But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul. -Deuteronomy 4:29
You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the Lord your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed. -Joshua 23:14
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. -Psalm 19:1-4
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. -Isaiah 41:10
Then young women will dance and be glad, young men and old as well. I will turn their mourning into gladness; I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow. -Jeremiah 31:13
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” -John 8:12
But whoever loves God is known by God. -1 Corinthians 8:3
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. -Philippians 4:7
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. -James 1:17
Of course, there’s way more than just 10 pieces of good news in the Bible… Read Scripture for yourself and see! If you tried to make a list of everything encouraging and helpful in God’s Word, you would be writing and writing and writing and writing and writing. Thank you, God, for the GOOD NEWS you bring us! Let His good news spur you forward and turn you into a mouthpiece for His kingdom. There are plenty of people in the world delivering not-so-great news. Be that person who’s sharing the best news of all!
